What is Creative Captioning?
The Creative Captioning Model is one where Captioning and The Captioner are included in and integral to the show’s Production Process. The show itself is changed by the act of making it accessible. It can work brilliantly well.
“One Under” Graeae Theatre / Creative Captioning
Digital 4 recently worked with Graeae Theatre, supplying our new full colour Venue displays and Venue Software for their production of “One Under”. This system allowed them to integrate the Caption Units into the set design so they were easier to view and to display different text on each display, or to display the same text on both displays, formatted in a way that really worked for the narrative.
“One Under boasts a groundbreaking combination of captioning and audio description”
The Stage
One Under contains brilliant integrated captioning and audience description, which brings this pertinent and urgent story about grief and mental health to new audiences.
A Younger Theatre
“Woyzeck” Birmingham Rep / Creative Captioning
Birmingham Rep were amongst the first theatres in the UK to purchase new full-colour Venue Caption units and Venue software and to embrace the possibilities for Creative Captioning, led by Dan Hoole and Nigel Cairns and the rest of their technical team and Captioners.
For “Woyzeck” they combined outputting to Caption Units with Projected Captions. The access was integrated into the production and every show in the run was openly accessible. Excellent stuff!
Digital 4’s full colour Venue Caption Units, and Venue Software with its extensive functionality – displaying a range of colours and fonts, multi-stream output – sending different content to different displays, and the wider range of display devices now available – projector, LCD displays, tablets and Smart Caption Glasses which can be used individually or in combination to simultaneously display Captions, have opened the door to a more creative approach to Theatre Captioning.
