Multi-Language Captioning
After English, Welsh, and Polish, the next most widely spoken languages in the UK are Indian and Pakistani languages like Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, and Punjabi, which taken together account for over a million people. There are also about 150,000 Chinese speakers and other pockets of smaller languages.
Sopratext Venue Software makes it possible to Caption in multiple languages simultaneously from a single Captioning Lap-top.
If you are using our Venue Caption Units you can choose which language screen is sent to which display so, for example, it is now possible to Caption shows in English and Welsh simultaneously.
If you have chosen Smart Caption Glasses or Tablets as your Display Device then a drop-down box on the device allows you to choose the language in which to view the Captions.
Multiple Language Captions in a Single Line
Many writers now reflect the multi-cultural nature of the UK by actually writing lines in more than one language.
The Royal Shakespeare Company’s “Museum of Baghdad” featured characters who speak English and Arabic in the same line, using Sopratext Venue Software we were able to output the bi-lingual Captions that this required.
For the Captioned performance of “One Thousand Suns” at Hackney Empire we again output Captions in multiple Languages simultaneously delivered to Caption Units either side of the stage.
Supporting Audience with English as a Second Language
Sopratext Venue’s multi-stream output also offers the opportunity to support Audience Members from our Communities who do not have English as their first language.
This may not strictly be “Captioning” but it is a great example of how the combination of our latest software and range of available displays extends the opportunities open to theatres to support and possibly increase their audiences.
Supporting Tourists to understand and enjoy our Theatre.
There is no limit to the number of Language Streams that you can output. Theatres who enjoy large numbers of tourists visiting their productions can now offer them the opportunity to watch Sub-Titles or Captions of the production in their own language on Closed Caption Devices such as Tablets and Smart Caption Glasses.
